Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt

For the Sauce:

  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Toppings:

  • Vegan cheese (store-bought or homemade)
  • Assorted vegetables (bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, spinach, etc.)
  • Fresh basil or arugula (optional)
  • Olive oil for drizzling

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine 3 1/2 cups of flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

2. Make the Sauce:

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. Add the tomato sauce and tomato paste, stirring to combine.
  4. Add the oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Assemble the Pizza:

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to preheat as well.
  2. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal portions for two medium pizzas or keep it whole for one large pizza.
  3. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness.
  4. Transfer the rolled dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet or preheated pizza stone.
  5. Spread a layer of tomato sauce over the dough.
  6. Add your desired vegan cheese and toppings.
  7. Drizzle a little olive oil over the top.

4. Bake the Pizza:

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the toppings are cooked to your liking.
  2. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.

5. Serve and Enjoy:

  1. Top with fresh basil or arugula if desired.
  2. Slice and enjoy your homemade vegan pizza!

Tips:

  • For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Experiment with different vegan cheeses and toppings to find your favorite combination.
  • Leftover dough can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.

Enjoy your delicious vegan pizza!
